Top Legend

Hearthstone Huddle

So this is a weekly article involving some personal opinions about Hearthstone. Key word there. Opinions. This week I’m talking about the “generic” legends that need to be owned by everyone, the top five to be exact. Now by generic I mean available to all decks and not class specific. So here goes, in no particular order.

1. Ragnaros, the Firelord
He’s an 8/8 for 8 mana so he passes the cost test. By that I mean his attack and defense are proportionate to his cost. His random eight damage can be a huge finisher, especially if you have board control. His lone weakness, the fact that he can’t attack, is also a strength in that he often gets left on the board. He is unsilencable (that’s a word) but is often the target of Faceless Manipulator because of his immediate usage.

2. The Black Knight
A 4/5 for 6 isn’t the best in terms of mana cost but his battlecry ability to destroy an enemy minion with taunt is unmatched. Considering how often Sunwalkers and Sludge Belchers are showing up these days, this guy is a beast. If you think about it, he’s an Assassinate and a Windchill Yeti rolled into one. Pretty solid for 6 mana.

3. Ysera
She’s a 4/12 for 9 mana so okay when considering cost. 9 mana is always a bit scary considering that it is almost always your only move for the turn. The flip side is you get a big body and unbelievable card draw that will almost always carry you to a win. Her dream cards are fantastic and possibly her best attribute is 4 attack, which makes her immune to the priest’s Shadow Word: Death.

4. Sylvanas Windrunner
A 5/5 for 6 mana so not great on the cost test. Her deathrattle ability is probably the best in the game and here’s why. First, you get to trade multiple minions depending on their board and second, you just steal one randomly as she dies. She is also a target for faceless and silence but, considering how many decks are running Undertakers now, she should be showing up more often.

5. Bloodmage Thalnos
A 1/1 for 2 is bad. A Loot Hoarder and a Kobold Geomancer rolled into one is good. That’s exactly what you get with Bloodmage . He has an application in almost every deck and has deathrattle which makes him a running mate for Undertaker. He’s goes great with mage, priest and druid, among others. He’s not a card that’s going to win a game for you but he will help you get there.

Honorable Mentions.
Leeroy Jenkins – Was the best legend before the nerf. Now just not as great due to 5 mana cost.
Cairne Bloodhoof – Two Chillwind Yetis for 6 mana and deathrattle. Great but often gets stuck in my hand.
Alexstraza – Essentially a 15 point Pyroblast for 9 mana. Can also be used on yourself if in trouble.
Loatheb – 5/5 for 5 is great and his battlecry ability just wrecks your opponent’s next turn.
